What is BMI?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a numerical measure commonly used to assess whether an individual's weight is proportionate to their height. It provides a quick and simple way to categorize weight status and identify potential health risks associated with weight.


BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. The resulting value is then compared to established BMI categories:

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5

  • Normal Weight: BMI 18.5 - 24.9

  • Overweight: BMI 25 - 29.9

  • Obese: BMI 30 or greater
